WINE 9.18 introduces new Media Foundation backend using FFMpeg

This Friday, two weeks after the previous, it was time for a new development version of Wine Is Not an Emulator, and it has been available for a few hours now. This time, WineHQ has given us WINE 9.18, a release that, at first, doesn't come with many exciting new features. The number of highlights is three, on average to low, so it could be noted that some developers are still on vacation or at half speed.

The list of notable new features is a new Media Foundation backend using FFMpeg, initial support for network sessions in DirectPlay, and a new desktop control panel applet, along with the usual bug fixes. As for numbers, WINE 9.18 has introduced 273 changes and has fixed 18 bugs, which you can see below.

Bugs fixed in WINE 9.18

  • The gRPC library does not send RPC packets correctly (non-blocking send() should not perform partial writes).
  • TreeView does not check the return value of TREEVIEW_SendExpanding.
  • The winrt headers generated by widl do not compile with C++ code.
  • Keyboard press generates NumLock press for all keys.
  • WordSmith 9.0 does not display text in the installer.
  • Steinberg Download Assistant crashes (part 2).
  • Repaper Studio crashes when USER32.dll.CreateSyntheticPointerDevice function is not implemented.
  • Gigapixel ai crashes on startup in win7 mode.
  • HID devices are not detected after removal until Wine processes are restarted.
  • 16-bit color no longer works when using Xephyr.
  • msiexec sometimes fails with unquoted file names.
  • Wine-dev 9.17 does not allow drag and drop of files into LTspice.
  • PathGradientBrushTest:Clone fails with InvalidParameter.
  • Caesar 3, Neighbors from Hell 1-2: Screen cropped.
  • Setup ends with: Do » to compile Wine.
  • wineconsole breaks in Wine 9.17 after moving its window (Far File Manager breaks as well, as a result).
  • Window surface leaks with non-DPI applications.
  • Warlords III: Darklords Rising shows a distorted image.

If there are no changes to the usual programming, it is expected that WINE 9.19 will arrive within two weeks with hundreds of tweaks to continue preparing the 2024 stable version that will arrive in January or February.
