Two weeks after the previous version , as is typical at this stage of development, WineHQ released WINE 9.12 a few hours ago . Among its most notable new features, as mentioned by the project itself, I believe three out of four, or even four out of four, stand out, so we could say it's a relatively significant release. What really caught my attention, however, is that they've updated the Mono engine to version 9.2.0.
Mono is the technology used in WINE to simulate the .NET Framework, a framework widely used in Windows systems, hence its importance. Equally important is the fact that they have rewritten the CMD.EXE engine, added initial support for user32 data structures in shared memory, and corrected the handling of asynchronous I/O state in the new WoW64 mode. The only less noteworthy item is the last one, the usual miscellaneous bug fixes. In total, they have made 310 changes and fixed 24 bugs.
Bugs fixed in WINE 9.12
- Conditional command with parentheses does not work.
- The parentheses cause cmd.exe to not recognize '2>&1'.
- Nested or mixed "FOR" and "IF" commands sometimes get different results in Wine and Windows.
- Incorrect substring result using enableDelayedExpansion.
- CUERipper 2.1.x does not work with Wine-Mono.
- It cannot recognize ... as an internal or external command, or batch script.
- You cannot substitute variables as a command.
- ESET SysInspector 1.4.2.0 crashes when wevtapi.dll.EvtCreateRenderContext function is not implemented.
- cmd.exe incorrectly parses a line with nested if commands.
- Rewrite (VN): Black screen videos with WMP backend and gstreamer.
- Serial port event waits should use asynchronous I/O.
- quartz:vmr7 – test_default_presenter_allocate() fails on Windows 7.
- Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed: Revelations do not run in the new WoW64.
- SuddenStrike 3 crashes when opening the intro movie.
- Firefox 126.0.1 crashes on startup.
- Death to Spies: The intro videos only have audio but no video.
- Receiving mail on BeckyInternetMail is blocked.
- The edges of the windows disappear.
- Assassin's Creed III crashes on loading screen (Vulkan renderer).
- FL Studio 21 gui problem.
- The 'pack' command of the Windows SDK application packager (MakeAppx.exe) crashes due to unimplemented functions in ntdll.dll.
- Applications do not launch with the wayland controller.
- virtual desktop «explorer.exe /desktop=shell,1920×1080» broken.
- The 32-bit wpcap program works abnormally.

WINE 9.12 is now available and can be downloaded from the button below. Its download page also contains information on how to install this and other versions on Linux operating systems, as well as others like macOS and even Android.
If there are no changes to the usual programming, it is expected that WINE 9.13 will arrive within two weeks with hundreds of tweaks to continue preparing the 2024 stable version that will arrive in January or February.
