WeTransfer makes changes: it begins to verify the emails to avoid the fraudulent use that has killed Firefox Send

WeTransfer subscription screen

A few minutes ago we reported the close Firefox Send. From the looks of it, the service has been being misused and Mozilla has decided to lower its blind. This is something you haven't wanted to do WeTransfer, but it seems that they are aware that they can make the same use of their platform and have decided to make changes. One of them, it seems, is to insist a little more that we create a free account, but there is more.

From now on, as explained in this noteWe will have to verify that the email we use to make the shipment belongs to us. For this, once the fields to send the file have been filled in, we will receive an email with a 6-digit verification number, and the process will only start once this code has been entered. But is this enough? Personally, I have no information on how the service is being misused, but I have verified that temporary and totally anonymous emails can be used.

WeTransfer adds a layer of security

Code request report

As you can see in the screenshots, now, when we enter the text box to enter our email, a text appears in which we read «You should verify your email so that we can make sure that it is really you«. The alternative is that we create a free account, one that will allow us to ship the same size, but we will not have to confirm our email every time we want to make a shipment, we can resend the files and also delete them.

WeTransfer verification code

As I just mentioned, I don't know if this is enough to prevent fraudulent or malicious use of the service. Others, like Twitter, can tell that we are using a temporary mail and rejects the registration, but that is something that does not happen in WeTransfer for its shipments without an account. In any case, for users who do not want to send malware or do phishing, the fact that the service remains open can only be good news.

UPDATED: Probably some of you have already seen XNUMX-Step Verification before, but it wasn't always like that (I recently sent without such a code). Now this step should be required of all users who are not registered with the service.
