SparkyLinux 8.4 is now available as the fourth update in the Sparky 8 "Seven Sisters" series, based on Debian 13 "Trixie". This new version incorporates all updates available in the Debian and SparkyLinux repositories up to August 9, 2026, and also restores a particularly interesting feature for those using older systems: support for 32-bit operating systems.
The new version maintains SparkyLinux's philosophy of offering a fast, lightweight, and customizable distribution, with different editions adapted to both modern computers and machines with more limited resources. SparkyLinux 8.4 is available for 64-bit systems, ARM64, and, once again, also for 32-bit x86 machines.
SparkyLinux 8.4 restores support for 32-bit systems
One of the main new features of SparkyLinux 8.4 is the return of installation and Live images for 32-bit computers . Debian stopped providing official Live and installable images for this architecture, which initially led SparkyLinux to abandon these versions as well. However, the project has reconsidered its decision because many older, perfectly functional computers with 32-bit processors still exist.
For these systems, SparkyLinux 8.4 offers i686 PAE images in MinimalGUI and MinimalCLI editions. The former uses Openbox as the window manager and provides an extremely lightweight graphical environment that users can customize to their needs, while the latter provides a command-line-only environment for those who prefer to build their installation from scratch.
The 32-bit images use the Linux kernel 6.12.102 LTS and are intended for systems with BIOS or UEFI. Unlike the 64-bit images, these editions do not include the Calamares graphical installer. Installation can be performed using the SparkyLinux installer from the terminal.
Linux 7.1 is available from the SparkyLinux repositories
Although the SparkyLinux 8.4 installation images for 64-bit computers use the Linux kernel 6.12.101 LTS by default , the project offers more recent versions from its own repositories. These include Linux 7.1.8, along with Linux 6.18.43 LTS and Linux 6.12.102 LTS.
This way, users can keep the included LTS kernel or install a newer version when they need updated hardware support. The ARM64 images, meanwhile, use the Linux kernel 6.18.39-rpi, adapted for this architecture.
The system is based on Debian 13.6 , while the available packages have been updated with the versions present in the Debian and SparkyLinux repositories at the time the new images were prepared. This provides a stable foundation along with the latest updates available for the distribution.
SparkyLinux 8.4 maintains several desktop options
The 64-bit edition continues to offer a wide selection of desktop environments and configurations. Users can choose from KDE Plasma 6.3.6, Xfce 4.20, LXQt 2.1.0, MATE 1.26.0, and a MinimalGUI edition based on Openbox 3.6.1. A MinimalCLI edition is also available for those who prefer to work without a full graphical interface.
The system includes LibreOffice 25.2.3 as the office suite, while a more recent version, LibreOffice 26.2.4.2, can be obtained from the Debian Backports repositories. For the browser, the images include Firefox 140.13.0 ESR, although the SparkyLinux repositories provide Firefox 153.0.3 for amd64 and arm64 architectures. Thunderbird 140.13.0 ESR is also included.
Regarding the available images, 64-bit PCs can use versions compatible with BIOS, UEFI, and Secure Boot, while ARM64 images offer Openbox and CLI variants. Recovery of 32-bit support is limited to the MinimalGUI and MinimalCLI editions, a logical decision to keep resource consumption as low as possible on this type of hardware.
Updating SparkyLinux 8 does not require reinstalling the system
Users who already have SparkyLinux 8 installed do not need to download a new image or reinstall the system to receive the new features of version 8.4. As it is an update of the same branch, simply keep the system updated through the usual repositories.
The new images are especially useful for fresh installations, as they allow you to start directly with all the packages and fixes available until August 2026. SparkyLinux 8.4 thus continues the "Seven Sisters" series approach, combining the stable Debian 13 base with different desktops, proprietary tools, and configurations adapted to both modern and older computers.
