The SparkyLinux development team has released a new update to its ISO images for the semi-rolling branch. This is... SparkyLinux 2026.03, which comes with the codename "Tiamat" and brings with it the latest from the Debian Testing repository, updated to March 14, 2026.
As is typical of their development model, this new version does not introduce a new branch, but rather Update the installers for those who wish to perform a clean installation.Users who already have a Rolling Edition on their computers do not need to download anything; by keeping their system updated (apt update && apt upgrade) they will have all these packages available for days.
SparkyLinux 2026.03 Tiamat: New Features and Technical Details
This update places special emphasis on offering the latest hardware thanks to its kernel. By default, the new images include the kernel. Linux 6.19.6However, Sparky's repositories already have other alternatives prepared, such as the 7.0-rc3 series, 6.19.8, or the LTS 6.18.18 and 6.12.77 for those who prefer maximum stability.
In the applications section, we find the Extended Support Release (ESR) versions of Firefox and Thunderbird, specifically version 140.8. But if you need the latest version of the Mozilla browser, you can also install version 140.8. Firefox 148 directly from the distribution's repositories.
The installation process has also been improved. The graphical installer has been updated. Calamari to version 3.4.2The system now technically allows single-character passwords during the process, although the developers strongly recommend using a strong password of 8 to 12 characters. Additionally, the command-line installer (sparky-installer) now offers the option to install the ia32 version of GRUB for UEFI on 64-bit machines.
An important detail for modern systems: if your system uses UEFI, the installation requires an active internet connection, and it is recommended to use the Calamares graphical installer. For older systems with BIOS, both the CLI and graphical installers work without problems.
