I remember several years ago, when I used SimpleScreenRecorder to share recordings of my Ubuntu screen. Canonical made the definitive switch to Wayland in April 2021, and it just so happened that I switched to Kubuntu around that time, so I was able to continue using my favorite tool. But it was a little while ago that I switched to Wayland too, and here I had to look for alternatives. Among them, I chose the protagonist of this article. A few hours ago, it released a new version, NOTE Studio 31.1.

OBS Studio is a cross-platform program, and when someone develops for multiple platforms, Linux users tend to be left behind. That's why it's nice to see that we're being treated better, as OBS Studio 31.1 includes lots of new features for kernel users.

New features in OBS Studio 31.1

  • Added support for Windows on Arm (WoA).
    • Builds for WoA are not fully developed and should be considered experimental.
  • New interface appearance options have been added, including font size and density (spacing).
  • Added zoom controls to the preview.
  • Added multitrack video support on macOS (Apple Silicon).
  • Added multitrack video support on Linux.
  • Added support for additional canvases for multitrack video output.
  • Added AV1 B-frame support for AMF.
  • Added support for GPU format/color/space/range conversion.
  • Added network optimizations and TCP pacing to multitrack video.
  • Added support for transmission delay in multitrack video.
  • Added Spatial AQ option for VideoToolbox encoders on macOS 15 or higher.
  • Added QVBR rate control for VA-API.
  • Added explicit sync support for screen capture with PipeWire.
  • Added support for V4L2 virtual camera in non-Linux environments (e.g. BSD).
  • Added hardware acceleration support for browser fonts on Linux.
    • The feature is disabled on NVIDIA GPUs due to compatibility inconsistencies between models and drivers.

Now available

OBS Studio 31.1 has arrived seven months after the earlier version and can now be downloaded from its official website. Availability for different Linux distributions will depend on the philosophy of each distribution.
