We already have a new version of one of the most popular Debian-based Linux distributions, at least if we take into account the DistroWatch ranking. About four months after the earlier version, they announced a few moments ago MX Linux 23.5, which is the fifth point update of Libretto. Among its new features we find updated databases, both at the operating system level and at the kernel level and the default graphical environment.
As the Debian on which it is based usually does, the team of developers behind MX reminds us that we are dealing with a timely update, so there is no point in reinstalling from scratch if you are already on 23.x. What they release in these cases are new images whose purpose is to make it unnecessary to install all the updates that have been released since 23.0.
Most notable new features of MX Linux 23.5
MX Linux 23.5 has arrived with Debian 12.9 as a base, as well as the possibility of installing the Linux 6.12.8 liqourix kernel. On the other hand, the graphical environment has risen to Xfce 4.20 — available just a month ago — in the main edition. Among the other new features, we find:
- MX Packageinstaller has improvements to the user interface and better display of package versions in third-party repositories.
- Screenshots from debian.screenshots are also available.
- Additional warnings on the live system if persistence has been requested on boot media that is read-only.
- Adjustments to the default fstab file set by the installer.
- Additional fallback modes in the installer.
- Many bug fixes.
- Many language updates.
- Many new applications in the MX "test" repositories.
The new images are available at the notes from this releaseIt is available on Xfce, Plasma, Flubox desktops and also for Rasbperry Pi.
