LibreOffice 24.8, new major update that comes with new functions and visual tweaks

LibreOffice 24.8

The Document Foundation has made official the launch of LibreOffice 24.8. With permission point updates, whose last I arrive a little over a month ago, this is the second version with the new numbering. Soon we will have to stop talking about new and old numbering, since TDF has already forgotten about the old one and the only thing it currently offers are the versions that have the year and month of release numbers.

Among the new features, a little bit of everything, but since what usually attracts the most attention is what we see, it is worth noting that Writer has included some tweaks to the user interface. What comes next is the full list of changes which you also have available in the notes from this release.

What's new in LibreOffice 24.8

In the privacy section, if the Tools/Options/LibreOffice/Security/Options/Delete personal information when saving option is activated, personal information will not be exported.

  • Writer:
    • User Interface: Formatting character handling, comment panel width, bullet selection, new hyperlink dialog, new Search cover in sidebar.
    • Navigator: Adding cross-references by dragging and dropping elements, removing footnotes and endnotes, indicating images with broken links.
    • Hyphenation: exclude words from hyphenation with a new context menu and display, new hyphenation between columns, pages or spreads, hyphenation between constituents of a compound word.
  • Calc:
    • Added FILTER, LET, RANDARRAY, SEQUENCE, SORT, SORTBY, UNIQUE, XLOOKUP and XMATCH functions.
    • Improved performance of threaded calculations, optimized redrawing after a cell change by minimizing the area that needs to be updated.
    • Cell focus rectangle away from the cell content.
    • Comments can be edited and deleted from the browser context menu.
  • Print and Draw:
    • In Normal view, it is now possible to move between slides, and Notes are available as a collapsible panel below the slide.
    • By default, the running slideshow updates immediately when changes are applied to the EditView or PresenterConsole, even on different screens.

General

In charts, scrolling is now possible in normal view, and notes are available as a collapsible panel. Additionally, by default the slideshow now updates immediately when changes are applied.

In the accessibility section, several improvements have been made in the management of formatting options; In terms of security, a new password encryption mode has been introduced in ODF documents; and in interparability, it now supports importing and exporting OOXML pivot table (cell) format definitions and PPTX files with heavy use of custom shapes now open faster.

LibreOffice 24.8 is the version that includes all the new features, but not the one recommended for production equipment. If stability is a necessity, TDF recommends LibreOffice 24.2.5, thus saying goodbye to the famous old numbering.
