Fanboys and haters, those types of users who don't even agree with themselves and who don't do much good

Fanboys and haters

I had wanted to write an article like this for a long time, but I couldn't find the time or a well-defined reason. But I'm going to do it today, since Sony just launched their Portal and the fanboys of the brand are already attacking anyone who speaks the least bit negatively about the new device. Summarizing the post before starting it, I am going to collect several examples of how not to be, since we only achieve something negative.

On the opposite side of the ring would be the haters, people who do nothing but criticize something. The theory says that the hater is someone who criticizes practically anything and without a serious reason, but what we are going to talk about here is someone who criticizes, for example, a brand no matter what it does, just the opposite of the fanboy. And the worst thing is, these "haters" also throw their poison towards people who don't think the same way.

Fanboys: "thanks for your whipping"

It's clear that no one has said anything like that, but I think it's understandable. He Sony Portal which is everywhere right now is an accessory, not a console. It allows you to play PlayStation 5 titles on a screen a little larger than that of the Steam Deck with a controller also attached to it. Sony announces it something like «Do you have a busy screen? No problem: keep playing on Portal«, and it is true, but only if you are close to the console and your WiFi is very very good. The problem is that if you move away a little there is lag, and you can't play if there is a certain delay.

What is happening on the networks is that there are people, even specialized in the subject, who complain about this, and the fanboys They attack those who criticize the device. They tell them things like that their connection is bad, that they should use repeaters... any excuse to defend Sony, as if they were a fan of a soccer team or Sony was feeding them.

Apple fanboys justify everything

What made me think about this article for the first time was another from an English media about Touch ID and not Face ID on Macs. The author said that Face ID did make sense on the iPhone because when you pick up the phone the screen turns Turn it on and Face ID works. That doesn't happen on the Mac, and if you have to touch a button, why not Touch ID? Well, I would answer that for security, and that why accept less.

El Face ID, the theory goes, collects many more points of biometric information than Touch ID, making it much more secure. Do we have to sacrifice safety because… that undercooked potato? I have a 2009 iMac, and when it was not mandatory to enter a password before there was a shared password keychain, I did not have a password. When I sat in front of that computer, I would touch the mouse or the Magic Trackpad and, wow, magic! The screen would light up. Precisely because we have to touch something on the Mac to turn it on, that something should be any other key other than Touch ID and have more security. What's more, iOS 17 has shown us It's not even necessary to touch anything.

The truth, besides that fanboys swallow it all, is another: Macs are always behind the iPhone, the device that brings the most benefits to the apple company. And Apple can be criticized, and more so from a medium with many followers, so that they try to improve. Something like that has ever happened with something published in OMG! Ubuntu!, which Canonical has come to add default extensions after an article in the famous medium about Ubuntu and Linux in general.

The Apple black sheep fanboy

Also interesting is the fact that Apple "has invented everything." Touch screens, portable players, fingerprint readers, tablets... No. Simply summarize with the truth: Apple does not invent; Apple takes a good idea that didn't work, improves it, and makes it a success. But he does not invent, as he did not invent the graphical interface.

Then there are others who clearly are Apple fans and want everything, but at least they criticize the brand a little. Perhaps the difference is that some are within Apple's select team, where rumors circulate about the treatment in even shipping of devices, and others are not, but if they were to criticize... I have recently read a couple of articles, from media under the same umbrella, which in both said that the 8GB of RAM that Apple now offers in some MacBooks is not enough. That's the way... but you might also not buy a Mac for the low price you describe if you don't agree with what it offers. It is an option.

Although I won't be the one to criticize someone who buys what they want with their money if they have enough. I bought an iMac when I was doing much better financially and I have never regretted it. Will I do it again? It is not 100% ruled out.

Haters: «Wrong, all bad! And your head too!

Haters are those who They criticize, but passing a little with the brands and the people who use something of theirs. There are also some in the Linux community, and no one can save us. And since there are so many options, there is hate (I won't say hate in Spanish) for everyone. Some time ago I published a survey to find out which desktop our readers preferred. He said you preferred KDE, followed by GNOME and, a little further away, Cinnamon. I then published an article with the survey data. Well, nothing, I received criticism saying that it was wrong, then when they see me publish about KDE they use sarcasm... For publishing a survey and its results, no matter how little participation it had?

Among us there is also the Ubuntu hater, because it is the most used Linux system and everything is bad, the Ubuntu hater rolling release, the Manjaro hater, that there is even a website counting the days since his last mistake... And much more generalized, the hate towards Windows. There I am for the simple reason that I suffered it on my first computer. XP was fine after installing 0, but it got annoying over time. I was doing poorly, and Ubuntu 6.06 changed everything for me.

Windows and macOS are also criticized because they are both proprietary software and because they are not one of the most ethical companies in the world. And users of any Apple device are also criticized for lacking intelligence when spending so much money.

Let's stay in the middle

Most Linux users are somewhere in the middle, which is the best. We can criticize Microsoft and its Windows, but many of us have dual boot or something with Windows for what it could happen. We criticize Canonical for their latest decisions, but we'll probably end up with something based on their operating system. And if there is something that affects us completely, how can we change everything (if the system is not immutable)…

What we cannot do is defend that Apple gives you 8GB of RAM because it is better managed, even if it is true, because it has been shown that sometimes it falls short. Nor can we defend that they do not include a more secure system in such an expensive device because... "you have to touch the keyboard anyway" (I cover my face in shame). Nor can we defend the Sony Portal if we are not even going to be able to do something that, although it may sound bad, is going to be done a lot with it, which is going to the bathroom.

You have to make constructive criticism, like the ones I have seen about the 8GB of RAM in Macs. And if the criticism is a non-purchase, the message also reaches them and they can try to improve. Although the hater can be annoying, the fanboy is the worst way to advance. I know that among our readers there aren't that many of those, but I'll say it anyway: let's not be fanboys. Followers yes, users too, but not fanboys. Not haters. Respect above all.
