DOSBox is still alive and is updated again

DOSBox capture

The DOSBox project is a fantastic MS-DOS operating system emulator that you can install on Linux to run classic video games and programs native to this old Microsoft system. You're probably already familiar with it; it lets you revive a large amount of old software and is incredibly easy to use. In fact, we've already dedicated several articles on LxA to explaining how it works, etc.

Lately, the project seemed to have died . But it's not. It's been updated again with a bug fix. It works well now, but it's good that they're continuing to polish it. You can visit the official DOSBox website for more information about the project, documentation, and to download the latest version of this emulator if you need it. The version is DOSBox 0.74, and the improvement is related to security…

DOSBox is still alive and the changes added are:

  • Fixed an issue that had been around for a long time. This is a bug that caused a buffer overflow and affected security. You can see more information by searching for the code CVE-2019-7165 (by Alexandre Bartel) with which this vulnerability has been marked.
  • In addition, a basic permission system has been added so that programs running within DOSBox cannot access the content of / proc, and this also has to do with security. The vulnerability has been marked as CVE-2019-12594, also discovered by Alexandre Bartel.
  • Others bugs Presents that also affected security have been solved.
  • And also fixed some issues related to rendering with OpenGL.

The new version, DOSBox 074-2, is now more secure, although there are no new features or other improvements. Furthermore, the development team continues working on the new version, DOSBox 0.75, which we will see soon and which will also bring improvements.
