Good news for the gaming world. CRYENGINE 5.4 Preview has been released and comes with Vulkan support, which is really interesting given the power of this graphics API that is gaining ground on OpenGL thanks to AMD's enormous contribution to the graphics world. For those who aren't yet familiar with CRYENGINE, it's a graphics engine developed by Crytek, initially as a test engine for NVIDIA and later used in Ubisoft games like Far Cry. It supports Linux and Android…
With this new release, the developers have integrated no fewer than 620 improvements. These include bug fixes, as is typical, as well as new features. Among these is the inclusion of support for the Vulkan API . Although it's still in an early stage of development, it's always good news to see one of the most famous game engines gain this support. And while the support is currently for PC, it will soon be extended to Android in the future—at least, that's the intention.
As I said, the news isn't yet focused on Linux , but there's nothing to suggest they won't bring this feature to the penguin platform as well, since, as I mentioned in the first paragraph, they support these systems. There have been rumors that some employees were working without pay to add this support to Linux, but for now, these are just rumors. We'll have to wait and see what happens, but I certainly hope this feature will be extended to Linux. It would be absurd if it didn't.
The truth is, many titles on Steam , Valve's store, use this graphics engine, so these improvements and those to come are very welcome. Soon, SteamOS users and those of other GNU/Linux distributions will be able to enjoy them.
