Who would have told me that? It's been more than 10 years since I started to move away from Google for privacy reasons. For a while I used Yahoo! and Bing, but in the end I opted for DuckDuckGo. The duck doesn't just promise privacy; it also has what they call !bangs, which can be used to search any popular service, such as Google or YouTube. But times change, and I'm using it more now. ChatGPT Search.
Before I continue, I would like to clarify something. Since there is not much information about it, I am not sure if ChatGPT Search is what it was originally advertised as. SearchGPTThe difference between services is clear: while ChatGPT Search integrates into your chatbot and requires registration, at least the former would not be the same in SearchGPT, as long as it doesn't see the light of day as a search engine as a service. What I'm using is chat search.
ChatGPT Search offers clearer answers
We recently published a note here at LXA about the launch of GIMP 3.0 RC2. The popular image editor's previous versions were 2.10 and 2.0, but I didn't know when each one came out. What I did was ask ChatGPT Search, and it told me the dates of both releases. Is this possible on the current holder of the crown for best search engine? Yes, sort of.
If we go to Google and enter “gimp 2.0 launch”, we will see that the first result shows us “In March 2004, GIMP 2.0.0 was released, which shows the change to the GTK 2.x toolkit.«, which is the answer I was looking for. But if what we enter is «gimp 2.0 and 2.10 launch», then it is already lost. With that same search, ChatGPT Search Tell me the arrival dates of both versions.
Another example is the one we see in the screenshot above: I asked him about Linux Addicts, just like that, separately, trying to provoke some kind of error. But no, he gave me the answer I was looking for. As what I really wanted was to get a screenshot of how this search engine works, it occurred to me to ask him, in that context, who Pablinux was. I think he left me too well, but he continued the conversation explaining that I am a contributor who has written more than 2200 articles in 5 years.
This is impossible in Google and other search engines, because they do not allow you to refine your search with a new entry. It is possible in iAsk, but extra tickets are limited.
But not everything is positive
Not everything is bright when it comes to using ChatGPT Search. There are also shadows, such as We have to use it within the chat and registration is requiredA traditional search engine allows you to perform searches from the URL bar and the results you will get will be the same as if you accessed it from its website. ChatGPT's search is not like that.
The good news is that it's not impossible. If it were, I wouldn't search with it so much; I'm too used to using the URL bar. The trick is to create a custom search in your web browser, provided it supports it. In Vivaldi, my personal choice, you just go to the search settings and include one with https://chat.openai.com/search?q=%s&temporary-chat=trueThe part after %s is not necessary and does not currently work, but I leave it in case it works in the future or as a reminder to find a way to not store searches in a new chat.
Because yes, that is another of the problems: everything is stored as a chat. In theory, the solution is to delete the chat manually, but this is another of the shadows of ChatGPT Search. If privacy is a priority, it may be best to stick with DuckDuckGo.
Still, I think the benefits are too great to pass up, and getting answers to my questions quickly is making me lean towards AI for certain searches.
