WINE 9.20 arrives with more formats supported in D3DX9 and almost 200 changes

Continuing with its bi-weekly schedule, although that will change in two or three more development releases, when the Release Candidates start arriving, WineHQ launched a few moments ago WINE 9.20As always at this stage of development, the project has taken advantage of these two weeks to add dozens of patches and corrections, although they are still far from the more than 600 changes we saw a few years ago.

The list of highlights for WINE 9.20 includes the included Capstone library for disassembly in WineDbg, more supported formats in D3DX9, static analysis and JUnit test reports in Gitlab CI, and more support for network sessions in DirectPlay, after which comes the usual last item of various bug fixes. As for numbers, there have been 198 changes and fixed 15 bugs, which you can see in the following list.

Bugs fixed in WINE 9.20

  • Victoria 2 (Steam) won't start with Wine-Mono.
  • Just Cause crashes when starting a new game (D3DXCreateTexture format not supported, alternative format crashes).
  • musl-based exp2() gives very inaccurate results on i686.
  • unimplemented function httpapi.dll.HttpSendResponseEntityBody.
  • Compiling wine with mingw/gcc 14.1.1 fails with error '-Wimplicit-function-declaration'.
  • Several games show a black screen/window on startup (BeamNG.drive, Wargaming.net games).
  • Executables/scripts with a dot in the name are not recognized….
  • Rhinoceros installers crash on bad_alloc.
  • wine-9.19 build with ffmpeg fails on winedmo on Ubuntu 20.04.
  • winetricks -q art2kmin shows several popups — Unable to load dll.
  • Helicon Focus 8.2.0 regression: opening images crashes the application.
  • Wine 9.13+ freezes in some applications using WMA Lossless audio.
  • KnightOfKnights crashes when entering the game.
  • In Notepad++ the search window crashes after losing and regaining focus.
  • Nikon NX Studio overlay windows are displayed incorrectly.

If there are no changes to the usual programming, it is expected that WINE 9.21 will arrive within two weeks with hundreds of tweaks to continue preparing the 2024 stable version that will arrive in January or February.
