And so it begins again. As with many software projects, after the release of a stable version, work begins on the next one. The WINE release schedule works like this: a stable version usually arrives at the beginning of the year (the most recent being v11.0Later, at the point we're at now, development of the next version begins, and development versions will be released every two weeks. At the end of the year, Release Candidates arrive weekly, and at the beginning of the year, the cycle starts again. With all this explained, It is now available WINE 11.1, the first brick of WINE 12 that will arrive in 2027.
Before we continue, one more explanation: maintenance updates for WINE 11.0 will be released throughout 2026, and these will be stable versions. The next stable version will be numbered, barring any surprises, WINE 11.0.1. The updates released every two weeks will increment by the second number (11.1, 11.2, 11.3…), and these will pave the way for WINE 12.0.
As for new features, WINE 11.1 has implemented several changes that were delayed after the code freeze, including more pixel format conversions in WindowsCodecs and more work on ActiveX Data Objects (MSADO), in addition to the usual bug fixes. Now available for testing, but it's not stable
Wine 11.1 is now available for download from the button below. Its download page also contains information on how to install this and other versions on Linux operating systems, as well as others like macOS and even Android.
In two weeks, if the usual schedule holds and nothing suggests otherwise, WINE 11.2 will arrive, also with dozens of changes to prepare for WINE 12.0, which, based on past releases, will arrive in early 2027. This pace will continue until the end of the year, when the release frequency will increase to weekly Release Candidates, then stable (WINE 12), and then development of WINE 13.0 will begin, but this is getting ahead of ourselves.
