WhatsApp calls are coming to the web, currently in beta. One less thing to envy about Windows and macOS.

  • WhatsApp Web now supports calls.
  • For now, only in the beta version.
  • Its performance still needs significant improvement.

Calls on WhatsApp Web

The WhatsApp calls are now available in the versión webTo be precise, and as we'll explain later, these features have already appeared in the beta version, and you can make calls and video calls. What you'll see is something like the header screenshot: on the right side of the window, to the left of the options and search, there's a new button that says "Call."

Once you press the button, you can choose between a voice call or a video call. If you choose voice, you can mute your microphone, and if you choose video, you have the option to turn off both your camera and microphone. However, keep in mind that for this to work, your browser must allow WhatsApp Web access to these hardware components. When you try to make a call, your browser will request permission, and generally, once you grant it, the call will always be allowed.

How to try the WhatsApp Web beta

Unlike the mobile version, which has limited spots, the web version doesn't. To try WhatsApp Web Beta, simply go to the gear icon in the bottom left corner, select Help and Feedback, and then select "Join the beta program."

Participate in the WA bea

Calls will appear in regular chats (with one person). At least for now, this isn't possible in group chats. If you don't see the "Call" button after joining the beta and entering a chat with another person, you can press Ctrl+F5 to refresh the window. That should be enough for the option to appear.

Needs improvement

The feature is brand new and needs improvement. At least in my tests, voice calls work decently, but I haven't been able to see anyone and no one has been able to see me. It seems to be in a very immature stage and will improve over time. But it's better than nothing.

With this, we now have one less thing to envy Windows users for, especially knowing that what our Windows friends have isn't much better than using it in a browser. In fact, it's said to be even worse.
