Last april we echoed of a proposal that called for the KDE edition of Fedora to become the main release. At the time we said that we thought it was unlikely that such a major change would happen, since Fedora is, for many, the most loyal operating system to GNOME of all those in existence. But now we have learned that this Fedora-KDE will promote and leave behind its time as spin moves.
Un spin moves Fedora is, in short, a version that is not fully official. As such, it is offered on a harder-to-find page, and we should not expect such direct support from the project. With the arrival of Fedora 42 There will be two main editions, the usual one with GNOME desktop and the new Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition. Although the name is a bit long, the important thing about it is the last word: Edition.
Fedora KDE on par with Fedora Workstation (GNOME)
The proposal, already accepted, is available at this link, and explains that, as discussed in Flock, it has been requested and granted that Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop spin moves be promoted to Edition for Fedora Linux 42. This includes, among other things, Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop Edition will be put on par with Fedora Workstation Edition on fedoraproject.org. Additionally, although they don't explain it like this, it will receive direct support from the project.
It will be a historic change in a distribution that, although it is true that it has desktops other than GNOME, until now it has done so in those editions to which they do not give so much importance. More historic would have been what we were not betting on, which was the change of graphical environment.
Fedora 42 will arrive in April/May 2025 and will do so with GNOME 48 and Plasma around 6.4 in the main editions.
