Say hello to Kit, the new Firefox mascot!

  • It will be used in marketing materials and other sections.

Kit, the Firefox mascot

Mozilla just presented a KitA new mascot for Firefox. Years ago, the browser's red panda logo was said panda circling a globe. Not that it was bad, but in a time when everything was flattened and simplified, they changed the logo, first arriving at the Nightly version (later on They did the same with Thunderbird. The next step has been the mascot, and I can't say it hasn't taken me by surprise.

I'll share my thoughts on pets later, but let's get to the main news story first. Mozilla says that «The Firefox brand is getting a makeover, and you get the first look. Kit is our new mascot and your new companion on an internet that's private, open, and truly yours."On November 11th, you will be able to set it as your Firefox homepage background, as you can see below."

The kit is available in new jerseys.

They've also created t-shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, and even water bottles with Kit logos, available at the Mozilla storeAs for the prices, I'd better not say anything…

And as promised: what do I think about mascots? Well, I'm not a big fan, and I'll explain why: I use Manjaro and Vivaldi, among many other things, and both projects have mascots. Have you seen them around much? Me neither. I think they're just marketing tools, and they're so little known that they don't help anyone understand what we're using.

Here There's Tony, by Vivaldi. And here Manjaro's mascot, which I don't think even has a name.

So yes, it's fine to have mascots, but if they're not everywhere, maybe it's better to just have a logo. In any case, Kit has arrived in the world and says hello.
