Rhino Linux 2025.4 introduces Lomiri desktop packages and promises more releases in 2026

  • Rhino Linux 2025.4 is the latest version of 2025.
  • In 2026 they expect to release more ISOs per year.
  • New packages for the Lomiri environment, for mobile devices and a generic version.

Rhino Linux 2025.4

The distribution that started as a project to offer a version of Ubuntu with a Rolling Release development model launched Its latest ISO from 2025. Named after Rhino Linux 2025.4For this version, they've spent a lot of time working with UBports, who work on Lomiri, formerly known as Unity8. And that's been the most notable new feature of this fourth release of the year.

The Rhino Linux project will collaborate in the development of Lomiriand also in the packaging and distribution of Lomiri for Rhino Linux on PINE64 devices. As a result of this work, they have made significant progress towards their goals and already offer two new packages: rhino-pine-lomiri-core y ubxi-lomiri-desktopThe second package will be compatible with PINE64 devices and their generic images. Lomiri will be the default desktop environment on these PINE64 devices, but little further information has been provided about what will happen with the generic images.

Lomiri on Rhino Linux 2025.4 "normal"?

It's not entirely clear to me, but it seems that's how it will be: Rhino uses its own Xfce-based desktop called Unicorn, which is the one you see in the header screenshot. If Lomiri is a possibility, a much lighter and, from my point of view, more modern desktop will be available. But I've tested it on other distributions and on a normal desk it wobbles a little.

Otherwise, many bugs in Pacstall have been fixed and the kernels have been updated to 6.18.1-generic for the generic ISO image, 6.12.62-sunxi for PinePhone and PineTab, 6.18.1-rockchip for PinePhone Pro, 6.9.0-okpine for PineTab2 and 6.17.0-raspi for Raspberry Pi.

And in 2026

They've promised to release more snapshots by 2026, meaning there will be more frequent releases. They haven't specified how many there will be, but they have said they will change their approach to working and handling bugs. For existing installations, this increased frequency shouldn't be noticeable, as the new images are for new installations.
