Raspberry Pi OS 2025-05-07

Raspberry Pi, the company popular for manufacturing and selling hardware with good quality and price, with its simple board at the forefront, has announced today the launch of Raspberry Pi OS 2025-05-07This version is not a completely new one, and is still based on Debian 12, but it's expected to be the last. Unless something happens that forces them to release an emergency update, which isn't common, the next one should already be based on Debian 13.

Debian releases a stable version every two years. Bookworm arrived in mid-2023, and Trixie (13) will follow in mid-2025. Shortly after, in a timeframe that depends on many factors — the version based on Debian 12 arrived very early because they released the Raspberry Pi 5 –, will release the first iteration of Raspberry Pi OS based on Debian 13.

Some new features in this version of Raspberry Pi OS

  • New version of the lock screen. Among other things, you can now lock the screen with the shortcut Ctrl + Alt + L, or from the power menu.
  • Automatic login options.
  • New printer app. Until now, they used a Python app with a less-than-perfect interface, but from now on, they'll be using one derived from the GNOME plugin, which they've turned into a standalone app.
  • Improvements to touchscreen management. Although Raspberry Pi OS is primarily designed for desktop use, it can also be used on tablets with the necessary hardware. Touchscreen support has been improved in this release.
  • Among the other changes, version 0.8.1 of the Wayland window manager labwc is now used, and the Squeekboard virtual keyboard for touchscreens has been modified to allow users with multi-monitor setups to choose which screen to display.

It's worth noting that the default Chromium installed has switched to using uBlock Origin Lite instead of the more versatile uBlock Origin.
