Mozilla is finally working on split view for Firefox.

  • Mozilla is already working on split view for Firefox.
  • At the moment it is only in the testing phase.

Firefox Split View

I'm currently a happy Vivaldi user. I've had my share of issues, like slow loading, but it's something I fixed, and it wasn't exclusive to Vivaldi; it was Chromium-based. When things aren't working out, you look at alternatives, and one of the options to always consider is FirefoxThe problem is that it's a browser that browses and little else, and I can't even imagine living without components like the sidebar, split view, or command strings.

Mozilla is far behind in terms of browser features. Others, such as Brave or Edge, have long offered the split view, and that's where the future of Firefox is headed. As we've seen in Windows ReportThe company behind the red panda's browser is already working on it, although they haven't explained how to activate this future feature. They've been working on it since at least early September, and the editors of this site have managed to get it working.

Split View in Firefox: A Matter of Time

With the option enabled, it is said that if you have two tabs open (I assume they mean “selected”) and right-click on one, you can choose “Add to Split View”. Firefox will be able to display them side by side as shown in the header screenshot. To exit split view, do the same, but this time choose “Separate Split View”. It also works on grouped tabs.

Without having been able to try it out firsthand, we can't say much more about the split view Firefox is preparing. We assume you'll be able to resize each tab and change its position to the other side, but we can't confirm this.

The browser that first came up with the idea for split view was Opera, back in 2012. The problem was that the feature disappeared when Opera switched to Chromium. Later, in 2015, Vivaldi adopted and improved it. Much later, just a few years ago, Edge and Brave joined the fold, and it looks like Chrome will soon follow.

These days, it's an essential feature. In fact, I'm using it to write this article, with my WordPress tab on the left and the Windows Reports tab on the right. It's good to see Mozilla implementing it soon. Better late than never.
