Linus Torvalds is already experimenting with Vibe Coding. But don't worry, it's just for minor personal projects.

  • Linus Torvalds tries Vibe Coding.
  • He uses it for the occasional unimportant personal project.
  • He still thinks that AI should not be used in serious projects.

Linus Torvalds with a robot for Vibe Coding

Linus Torvalds has switched to Vibe CodingJust kidding. The creator of Linux is, in fact, one of the most vocal critics of Artificial Intelligence, even going so far as to say that almost all of it is marketing, something I agree with. However, Torvalds also does things for fun, and one thing he's currently doing is working on relatively unimportant projects, letting AI assistants help him. For example, AudioNoise.

AudioNoise is «Another silly guitar-pedal related repository"More or less. It's a project that started during the Christmas holidays, and it's basically a program to simulate the effects of a guitar pedal. He's developing it with..." Antigravity, fork VSCode, developed by Google and integrated with Gemini, is an IDE designed primarily for Vibe Coding.

Is Linus Torvads going to Vibe Coding?

This is all just a curious tidbit of news. Linus Torvalds will continue developing Linux "by hand." As he has mentioned on several occasions, he uses Vim to write the code, and It doesn't even make use of what is known as IntellisenseThose little features in editors like Visual Studio Code that allow you to write faster and eliminate errors. I don't entirely agree with the latter, but I understand it.

A while ago, I had a colleague who wrote websites with Notepad, and he did everything by hand. I was already using Intellisense and Emmet in VSCode, and I could, for example, use `h1` followed by a tab to insert... Besides saving time, it's harder to make mistakes with the syntax. But sometimes it does something unexpected, and for that reason some people prefer to do everything without automation.

What will happen in the future? I don't have a crystal ball, but I don't think Linus Torvalds will switch to Vibe Coding or even start using Intellisense. On the other hand, it's more likely we'll see many more of his projects like AudioNoise, since Vibe Coding improves productivity. That said, if we do encounter any bugs in his entertainment projects, we'll probably have to blame the AI.
