Six months after previous major update, LibreOffice 25.8 is now available as the new stable version of The Document Foundation's office suite, with a clear focus on speed, stability, and interoperability. The update includes profound changes to the layout engine and interface to facilitate adoption by both new and advanced users.
In addition to technical improvements, The suite strengthens local control of documents: It requires no connection, does not incorporate telemetry, and offers privacy options that suit organizations and individuals who avoid dependencies on third-party platforms. Major new features include PDF 2.0 export and an application-level Viewer mode.

Performance takes a noticeable leap: Writer and Calc open files up to 30% fasterScrolling through large documents is smoother, and memory management has been optimized for virtual desktops and thin clients. Hyphenation and word spacing have also been thoroughly revised for more precise composition.

Writer: finer layout, revision, and control
Writer incorporates the partition rule “Move line” to decide whether or not to break the words on the last line of the page and, if necessary, move the entire line to the next page. End zones are added for paragraph, column, page and spread, along with parameters for minimum, desired, and maximum spacing between words.
Index fields now display in their tooltips primary and secondary keys, and the Title Navigator includes a tooltip with the word and character count of the outline that spans the sublevels.
A command is added for insert a paragraph break before a table and improved control of text selection while scrolling, preventing unwanted selections when reviewing long documents.
For environments with protected documents, there is a new dialog that allows copy the contents of a field from a read-only file. There is also a field showing the page count of a range until the next numbering restart, and a command to convert fields to plain text.
In change tracking, Writer brings log through the window, the ability to “restore” modifications, more robust support for interdependent changes, an option to write images in the auto-compose dialogue and the ability to set the language of certain punctuation marks.
Calc: New features and more control when importing
The spreadsheet adds a wide range of functions: CHOOSECOLS, CHOOSEROWS, DROP, EXPAND, HSTACK, TAKE, TEXTAFTER, TEXTBEFORE, TEXTSPLIT, TOCOL, TOROW, VSTACK, WRAPCOLS and WRAPROWS, significantly expanding the possibilities for data transformation.
When importing CSV, a box “Always show on import” allows you to choose whether or not the Text Wizard appears by default. Additionally, the Text Import dialog box is only displayed when Paste Special is used, avoiding unnecessary interruptions during normal paste operations.
May customize operators In conditional formatting icon sets, “Clear AutoFilter” is added to the context menu, and now OLE objects (such as charts) are resized proportionally.
Impress and Draw: Fonts, Mockups, and Workflow
Impress improves the font management with PPTX, with embedded font support and a more refined algorithm for deciding which fonts to embed when exporting. It's also possible to modify how many slides are displayed per row in the Sorter using Ctrl + rueda.
