GParted Live, the well-known open source partition manager, announced the arrival of its update 1.7.0-8, incorporating interesting new features and maintaining its position among the most practical utilities for managing partitions without data loss. This software is especially useful for both experienced users and those looking to perform disk maintenance or migration tasks easily and reliably.
In this new installment, powered by the Linux kernel 6.12.37-1 Based on the Debian SID repositories, GParted Live takes a step forward in stability and compatibility. The update arrives just over five months after the previous version, and one of its most notable features is the inclusion of a mechanism capable of minimizing the random appearance of block devices during use of the live system, a crucial aspect for consistency and security in partitioning operations.
New file systems and built-in tools
With this 1.7 series, GParted Live has started to offer Experimental support for the Bcachefs filesystem, a significant advancement for those looking to take advantage of recent storage technologies. Additionally, it adds the ability to recognize network block devices (NBDs) and implements a method that prevents GParted detection from activating LVM volumes, increasing security and preventing unwanted modifications to logical volume systems.
This version also has optimized the handling of exFAT partitions, now reading used space directly from exfatprogs 1.2.3 or later. The minimum required version of the libparted library has also been raised to 3.2 for compatibility, and a crash that could occur when searching for partitions if btrfs-progs wasn't present on the system has been fixed. Continuous integration processes have also been updated for popular distributions such as Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Rocky Linux 8.
New features in the live system include three new Essential Packages: bcachefs-tools y bcache-tools for Bcachefs support, and util-linux-extra, which provides common tools for those working interactively on Linux systems.
Download and availability of GParted Live 1.7.0-8
From the official website, ISO and USB images are now available GParted Live 1.7.0-8, available exclusively for 64-bit systems. The ISO image can be burned to a CD or the USB version can be installed on a flash drive, adapting to different user needs. It should also be noted that Support for 32-bit computers is no longer offered, so older systems will have to look for alternatives or previous versions.
The latest update to GParted Live reinforces the project's commitment to stability, compatibility and technological update, incorporating improvements requested by the community and remaining an essential tool for managing partitions in GNU/Linux environments and open systems.
