Valve he presented The Steam Machine, along with the Frame and the Controller, was unveiled less than a week ago. There's been all sorts of discussion, from the price to the future of video games, but also about the hardware it includes and its design. It's the latter that we'll focus on here: the Steam Machine's cube shape, which has led the community to nickname it the "Steam Machine Cube." GabeCube.
Why GabeCube? The -Cube part is clearer: It's a cubeGabe—that must be true for those who know Valve well, but not so much for those who don't. And that's because Valve's CEO is called... Gabe NewellAll of these elements combined result in that GabeCube. But there's more: some people compare the design of the Steam Machine to the... GameCube which Nintendo released in 2001.
How to add a GabeCube video to Steam
The nickname is spreading like wildfire on social media, and it's so popular that they've even released an animated video for entering the Steam interface. How can you add it? The most official way to add animations like this to Steam is through the store itself, but there's a semi-official method explained on steamdeckrepo.com:
- You will need to be in desktop mode to perform the download, so first we switch to desktop mode.
- Let this link and download the video. You can do this by clicking the three dots on the video and selecting "Download".
- We move the video to the route /home/deck/.steam/root/config/uioverrides/movies/.
- Now you need to enter Big Picture mode or game mode, go to the Parameters customization section and choose the video.
All of this will be even more fun when it becomes possible to play it on the "GabeCube," which is coming in early 2026. You can play it on the Deck, but I don't see the point. In any case, the GabeCube is already on its way.
