Flatpak doesn't work on Ubuntu 25.10

It's been less than 24 hours since Canonical released Ubuntu 25.10 And now we have to report the first controversy. In other releases there were problems with installers and ugly themes, and in Questing Quokka we have one that affects flatpak packagesThe first time I read about this ruling was in the Xubuntu 25.10 release notes, but the issue has been confirmed to affect the entire quokka family, even when updating.

It's clear, or so it seems to me, that Canonical would like this bug to be permanent, since they want us to use snap packages and move away from flatpak. But the bug's days are numbered. It is currently possible to install flatpak packages—the software that manages these types of packages—using apt, but an error will occur when attempting to install packages. The problem arises because AppArmour doesn't play well with fusemount3, as we read on Launchpad.

Flatpak packages will be compatible with Ubuntu 25.10.

The point is that the The AppArmour profile for fusemount3 does not have the necessary privileges to function properly on Questing Quokka.. fusemount3 is a tool that Flatpak relies on to mount and unmount filesystems. Without the correct permissions, it simply fails. fusemount needs to be able to access paths like /run/mount/utab, and AppArmour is blocking access.

There's no estimated release date for the patch at this time, but it's on the way. And for reasons like this, sometimes it's not worth it to be what's known as an Early Adopter (one of the first to receive something). Canonical typically pushes out updates, or rather, notifications that there's a new version of the system, can take a few days to arrive, and for good reason: waiting to make sure everything works as expected.

And by waiting, hopefully, we won't have to wait long. I hope I haven't confused anyone with these lines.
