Firefox 153 will allow sharing a link from a QR code

  • Firefox 153 will arrive within a few weeks as a stable version.
  • If they don't back down, it will allow sharing links using QR codes.

QR code in Fireox 153

Firefox 153 It will arrive in less than two months, but some of its new features are already known. At least some of the features Mozilla is developing are known and could make it into the stable version, although that's not guaranteed. For example, the new design of the settings menu... we talk to you midweek. Now it's also been revealed that he's working on something useful that I already use daily with my default browser.

It might seem like the wrong place or time, but it is. For a long time now, when I want to share a link from my laptop to my phone, I generate a QR code using a button on the right side of Vivaldi's URL bar. I don't remember exactly when it became available, but I do use it quite often. Unless they reverse course, Firefox 153 will include something similar, although there are two obvious differences.

Firefox 153 and QR codes

The biggest difference is how sharing is done in Vivaldi and how it's done in Firefox 153, at least in this first versionAs mentioned, Vivaldi displays the button in the URL bar, making sharing convenient and intuitive. To share the QR code in Firefox Nightly, right-click on the tab and select Share/Generate QR Code. It's also available in the File menu (to access the menu bar if it's hidden, hold down the Alt key).

The other detail that sets it apart from Vivaldi is the logo in the middle of the QR codes generated by Firefox. In the browser with the fox logo (yes, they're now saying it's a fox), the logo appears in the center, which makes it more aesthetically pleasing.

If anyone is wondering what to do with these codes, any reasonably modern smartphone can read them using its default camera app. Otherwise, there are many QR code reader apps available on the Google Play Store and App Store.

This is the kind of new feature we like to see in Firefox: useful functions that improve productivity. As the protagonist of a movie released this week would say, this is the way.
