Fedora Asahi Remix 42 arrives on ARM Macs with Plasma 6.3

Fedora Asahi Remix 42

It wasn't because of the blackout we suffered yesterday in Spain, but the fact is that we missed this news, which may be of interest to owners of a Mac with the new Apple Silicon processors. Maybe not right now, but for a future when the Apple company lets them go—and it doesn't usually take more than 5-6 years. And it's in the middle of this month. it became official the launch of Fedora Asahi Remix 42.

The new version is based on Fedora 42, and arrived long before an older version which announced its availability weeks after Fedora 41. Like the system on which it is based, uses Plasma 6.3 by default, and introduces FEX integration which provides an easier way to run x86 and x86_64 binaries after a clean install using emulation.

Other new features in Fedora Asahi Remix 42

This version has improved support for Apple Silicon, i.e., Apple's computers since they decided to switch to ARM with proprietary processors. The list of supported Macs is as follows:

  • MacBook Air M1 and M2.
  • MacBook Pro M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M2, M2 Pro and M2 Max.
  • Mac Mini M1, M2, and M2 Pro.
  • Mac Studio M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2 Max and M2 Ultra.
  • iMac M1

This update provides a dedicated initial setup wizard based on Calamares, and a GNOME 48 option is available. Finally, it includes all the exciting new features that came with Fedora 42. Additionally, there is a Server version and a minimal image for those who prefer to create their own Fedora Asahi Remix 42 experience. Users of previous versions 41 and 40 can upgrade from within the operating system.

If you have an Apple Silicon and want more freedom, this is your chance… although we'd understand if you didn't come right away.
