Debian 13.1

The Debian Project posted Debian 13.1, the first refresh of the installation images of the current stable series «Trixie»It arrives just a few weeks after Debian 13 with the goal of facilitating clean installations and minimizing patch downloads after the first boot.

This release brings together 71 bug fixes in various packages along with 16 security updatesFor those who struggled with previous ISOs or are deploying the system on new computers, these images provide a more polished foundation from the get-go.

Featured updates and fixes

At the system level, Debian 13.1 integrates Linux 6.12 LTS kernel tweaks which provide additional stability, as well as multiple package-level fixes to improve the overall experience.

Among the technical changes, one stands out: temporary solution to a graphical initialization failure of the GRUB boot loader, which could affect certain environments when displaying the menu or starting the system.

In the application compatibility and security space, support is added for Python 3.13 for PyRaf, as well as the correction of the support of OpenSSL 3.5.1 on StrongSwan, along with a good number of additional fixes distributed throughout the repository.

Download and images available

The new installation images are now available for the following architectures: amd64 (64-bit), AArch64 (arm64), RISC-V (riscv64), ppc64el, s390x and ARMhf (armhf)This updated tool eliminates the need to apply hundreds of packages after completing the installation.

Also published live images (64-bit only) with pre-installed desktops for testing or installing your preferred environment directly. Options include KDE Plasma 6.3, GNOME 48, Xfce 4.20, Cinnamon 6.4, LXQt 2.1, MATE 1.26.1, and LXDE 13.

Additionally there is an edition "Junior" with IceWM designed for modest equipment and other "Standard" without graphical environment, ideal for servers or minimal installations.

How to upgrade to Debian 13.1 if you're already on Trixie

If you are already in the Trixie series it is not necessary to download new ISOs. Simply refresh indexes and apply all updates by running sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade in a terminal, or using your usual graphical package manager.

To check which version you have installed, you can run cat /etc/debian_version on your terminal; this will confirm if your system is the day after the process update.

With this first update point, Debian strengthens the stability of Trixie by gathering fixes and security patches into new installation images, expands support for architectures and desktop environments, and provides a clear path to update without reinstalling for those who already have Debian 13 running.
