A new era under the governance of the Linux Foundation
The transfer of AGNTCY to the Linux Foundation This represents the definitive step toward attracting more industry players and consolidating the proposal as a cross-cutting standard. The foundation, known for its mediating and neutral role in the development of key technologies, will host the project in a collaborative and transparent environment, seeking to ensure that the solution benefits the entire technological ecosystem.
Currently, more than 75 companies support AGNTCY, joining major names such as Dell Technologies, Google Cloud, Oracle and Red Hat. The main objective is that any AI agent, regardless of its manufacturer or the environment in which it is deployed (in the cloud, private infrastructures or at the edge), can be integrated into this new “Internet of Agents”.
Key components of the AGNTCY project
Cisco's contribution goes beyond a simple code transfer: AGNTCY incorporates a comprehensive framework designed to solve the main challenges associated with collaboration between AI agents.. Among its fundamental elements are:
- Agent Discovery: Through an open scheme (OASF), it acts as a “DNS for agents” so they can locate each other and know their capabilities.
- Verifiable Identity: Agents rely on cryptographic systems that guarantee their authenticity and enable secure actions between different providers.
- Efficient and secure messaging: The SLIM protocol enables low-latency, multimodal, quantum-safe communications, including human-in-the-loop interaction.
- Advanced Observability: Specialized tools and frameworks facilitate the monitoring and debugging of complex, probabilistic systems.
- Protocol interoperability: The project supports standards such as Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP), further expanding its application scenarios.
All of these components are available in a public GitHub repository, inviting developers and organizations to collaborate and contribute to its development.
Industry support and vision
Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, has highlighted the importance of this donation for the future of collaborative artificial intelligence: "AGNTCY lays the groundwork for secure and open collaboration between autonomous agents, keeping the infrastructure accessible and free from the interests of a single provider.".
For its part, Vijoy Pandey, senior vice president and general manager at Outshift by Cisco, noted that agentic AI is currently experiencing a moment similar to the early days of the internet, when a lack of standards prevented communication between different systems and platforms. With AGNTCY, the goal is to prevent new AI agents from falling into the same isolation errors. and inequality of capabilities.
Since its introduction, AGNTCY has demonstrated practical applicability in cases as diverse as automation of telecommunications networks or the optimization of continuous development environments (CI/CD) based on artificial intelligence, demonstrating its versatility and robustness.
