Be careful with your Steam Deck if you have Decky Loader installed. The latest update is causing problems

Broken Steam Deck

Recently, Valve has released a Steam Client update and another SteamOS update. So far, everything is very normal: new software with improvements and bug fixes. What is no longer so normal, or at least desirable, is that one of the updates causes problems in the Steam deck, the handheld computer that the company he presented in 2021. If we take a walk around Reddit, we will realize that something is happening.

The problem is not general; It doesn't happen to everyone or randomly without explanation. Many users report that they had installed Deck Loader and that when updating it has stopped working, or something worse. The community has already found a solution, and that is what we are going to share here. In the worst case it would have to be restored, but it does not seem to be necessary.

Steam Deck + Decky + Update = problems?

Decky Loader is an open source program that soon became popular among Steam Deck users when it was released. Using a read-only system, making changes to it is not the easiest, and that is what Decky allows you to do. As we mentioned, the problem usually appears if you have Decky installed and the latest SteamOS update. Users may encounter three scenarios:

  • No problem. Probably because it doesn't have Decky, although it's possible that nothing will happen if it is installed. Just in case, I will write this in capital letters and underlined.
  • Screw everything related to Decky. Another option is that what has been installed/modified with Decky presents problems.
  • You see an error message and do not enter game mode. This is what can scare the most.

From what I have been able to investigate, many users claim that the solution is to enter desktop mode, uninstall Decky and reboot. Although it is advisable to do things differently. It is advisable to disable Decky and similar software before updating and activate it after the update.

It doesn't hurt to explain how to recover the system to the last version that worked, also from Reddit: «Press and hold the three-dot button while turning on the Deck and a menu will appear allowing you to switch to the previous SteamOS backup. This basically restores SteamOS to before the update«.

I hope none of this has happened to any of our readers. And if so, may they have been able to solve it.
